'Raito' means light in Japanese. This painting was part of a solo exhibition in Rye, England in 2021, called Translations. I was living abroad at the time and was interested in how different the light frequency was. In this painting, I am playing the play of light and dark and by putting the light in the middle of the work, I am making a commentary about the power of light to overcome dark. Like many of my works, I have given the piece a clay or earthy coloured grounding. That also has spiritual significance to me and represents how we need to have a firm base. For me it's my faith, but for another person it might be the literal earth, or a passion for something or a loved one.
