This is a portrait of a railway worker from many years ago when much of the work was hard labour. The image is one of a series of paintings I worked on in 2013, before heading to Cyprus and the residency, exploring Britain's industrial age and the industry of years gone by. The photo I worked from struck a cord with me and I wanted to capture the portrait of the unknown man, without the machinery and tools of his trade, which I left out. All I required and was interested in was to capture the physical image of the workman in his work uniform.
The image is probably inspired in-part from knowledge that my Grandad used to off-load and load coal from trains into his lorry, by shovel, after the Second World War.
