The best way to describe the making of this picture is to think that you are making a quilt but you only have plain white material to work with, in other words, a blank canvas. The first thing to do is to plan your overall design, layout. In this case, it is an abstract design. The second thing you have to do is to design the patterns that you want to work with. Now you are ready to start constructing your quilt (picture) by selecting your pattern t suit your shape and to keep doing this until you complete the quilt, also during this process, you have to visually balance the overall image and make it interesting on the eyes. Nothing to it really
BACKGROUND.
Each artwork has its own history but there is also an
overall history. History in this context means thought
pattern and the thought pattern behind all my work is
based on the visual pattern and the power it has when
used in a picture.
When looking at Aboriginal Art pattern was the main
ingredient. Back at the beginning of the 20th century, there
was a large exhibition of African Art touring Europe and
this had a major effect on the artists of the day and giving
birth to what we now know as Abstract art.
For me, Abstract Art is the study of the Art language, the
language that all artists use. Think of a brushstroke, a
brush stroke is in itself an abstract shape and by putting
different brush strokes together you can create any image
you want and this is where, I think, the power of pattern
comes in. The only way to prove my point is to work in a
totally abstract style and this is what I do.
Promarkers and soft pastels on water board.
