This small piece depicts the Croatian town of Pula, on the Istrian Peninsula. Over the dusky Meditteranean, the setting summer sun often produces a fiery backdrop. Pula has an ancient history, with this piece representing a view from only two hundreds metres from an ancient Roman Colosseum, the 'Pula Arena'.
The sun has set like this over the Croatian coast for millennia, but facing into the sunset, a display of cranes has been established. The cranes are bathed in bright artificial coloured light, appearing like birds rising from the docks. The juxtaposition of natural and man-made light is visual representation of the contrast of man's very recent imposition on the earth.
