Are you ready to be a contender? It was fight night for this model. James put them up. Hands raised in front of him, shuffling and bobbing. So why pugilist?
Well pugilist is an old word for boxer. In the old days it was often called the noble art. It's usually used with a sarcastic tone these days. It's a criticism of the boxer's claims for the gentleman sport, which others see as savagery
.
Bright blue pastel has been used to outline the figure and ochre to create tone. Highlights in white.
Pastels on a purple sugar paper 30 x 42 cm (c. 12 x 16 "). It will either be rolled for delivery (glassine inside to protect the drawing) or wrapped in glassine and sandwiched in cardboard depending on where it is being sent to.
Mounting/Mat Suggestion: An image is included of how the piece could look if float-mounted or put behind mountboard(s) [in the US known as mats] before framing.
On the back there is an unfinished drawing of James in a cross legged yoga pose. It is common for artists in the post and modern times to use both sides of a paper or canvas. The work does not show through to the other side, but you are advised it is there so you are not surprised on receipt of your purchase.
