Proscenium- Greek or Roman theater stage, the part of a stage in front of the curtain
Before moving forward and progressing as individuals, or in my case as an artist, it is vital to appreciate what has come before and the techniques applied. In this piece, I wanted to us a medium which I have been working with for sometime, but have never applied my hand to with oil; wood.
This piece is done on wood canvas, much like those done in the early years during the great masters. However, instead of applied generous base coats, filling in wood grains, and removing all imperfections. My goal was the exact opposite. My intentions were to use these natural characteristics of the wood as the very stage and essence of this piece. I wanted my oil work to flow with the cracks and turns of the wood grain, to have the natural imperfections highlight the stature, and allow the brilliance of the color to add to the depth of the overall painting. I embrace the art of simplification with all of my work. I find that this gives it the most character and allows me to create work that is emotionally charged. It is for this simplicity handicap that I believe the beautiful organic tones and fluidic motions were able to be expressed so effortlessly on this piece, as well as give it life as soon as the light hits one of the many ridges buried underneath. This will forever be a life filled work, for it was made on part of what all modern life began on. Earth.
The piece has been protected with special oil varnish to protect both the wood and oil paint from the elements.
