I saw. I liked. I painted. That's really all there is to it. Coastal pelicans. These are preening on a rock in the Intracoastal Canal in Galveston, right next to where the shrimpboats dock. This is what they do while waiting for the boats to come in with the day's catch. This one is a bit looser style than how I usually paint pelicans. I left out some detail and used bigger brushes. I always try to paint looser but usually my hands take over and I paint tighter. A lot of painters have the opposite challenge: they say it's easy to paint loosely but difficult to paint tightly.
