Precarious was inspired by a spectacular shadow that appeared on the wall at George’s Fish House here in Sarasota while we were having lunch. The lunch was not great but I was certain that the sketch of the shadows created by the windows against an angled wall were pure gold. The oval shadows seems to gently fall down the wall. The idea of a gradually falling shape (I pictured a Mango) falling end over end, incrementally from top to bottom was captivating. My 7.5” x 96” format ideally fit the tumbling concept of implied kinetic movement. I love the piece… from concept to construction to completion.
All of my sculptures are made out of wood (Cedar). They are intended to be placed in an interior environment only. Although my sculptures are photographed outside. The decision to shoot my work outside is intended to provide the viewer a more accurate sense of color and texture. Natural light is hard to beat.
I have always had an affinity for creating with wood. Over the years I've restored 10 properties. Several were historic. One is listed on the National Registry of Historic Structures. I've also built wooden boats. My career was dedicated to teaching studio art at three different colleges over a period of 44 years. I've exhibited in NYC, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Florence Italy, Liverpool England, and numerous museums and galleries throughout the US. Creating challenging provocative work has been a life long goal. I consider myself a process artist. My that I mean... I enjoy all aspects making the work. After that I basically leave it in the hands of the gods.
The piece is colored with wood stains prior to the application of the 4 coats of Pro Urethane.
Precarious comes with a 18" tall base. The base of the sculpture slides easily into the slotted base. The base is shipped seperately.
