This painting, one of my “Anachronistic Etudes” tribute series, explores the passionate motifs and style of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Instead of simply copying her paintings, I like to create new compositions that borrow familiar motifs from her well-known works. I also introduced a few anachronistic twists, such as putting Frida into Diego Rivera’s painting of the Calalily Vendor. The “Dears and Dogs” mentioned in the title is an intentional pun, referring both to Frida’s lovers, Leon Trotsky and Diego Rivera, as well as to her famous pets.
