Works within my cultural proverb collection are a direct response to well known proverbs from different cultures I belong to or have been thoroughly exposed to. In every translation from the written to the visual something is lost, but something else is gained. It is this ambiguity that introduces the possibility of multiple interpretations. Nevertheless the relationship between image and language is symbiotic, as the recognition, and ultimately meaning of the work relies upon the ubiquitousness of the saying. These proverbs carry moral teachings that are subtly passed on to the viewer through exaggerated representational elements of common struggles. Because these narratives contain such key aspects of the human experience, they have held the world’s attention, and stayed relevant throughout all these years.
The following work was created in response to the saying "por la boca muere el pez" in Spanish loosely translated to "the fish dies from/because of the mouth". This saying speaks of the consequences of gossip, greed and incontinence. The imagery of the fish getting caught by the mouth is extended on to the person who seems to act as the bigger link in the food chain but nonetheless susceptible to the same fate as the weaker animal. The person falls prey to their own hubris, in a verbose way.
