I love creating typography and fonts by hand like an old-school graphic designer. This particular piece of typographic art is directly inspired by an image found in a fanzine called Forgotten Graphics, which collects old retro graphic designs around themes. In this particular instance it was labels for various fizzy drinks and Coca-Cola rip offs, also known in the UK as fizzy pop.
One such example had the word 'pop' written onomatopoeically with a Roy Lichtenstein style explosion graphic behind it, and whilst I loved the image on its own, it occurred to me that it's the perfect representation of the style of art that I like and create - pop art. So I adapted the image to the colourful square canvas you see here. Amongst the product photos you can see the painting next to the magazine that inspired it.
The end result is an eye-catching image that would look great in any room in the house, or be the perfect present for another lover of pop art, retro design, or fizzy drinks.
It was made using acrylic paint on stretched cotton canvas.
