A moody aquatint etching, in a bespoke solid wood frame.
This is an atmospheric etching created after a New Years Day walk on the windswept beach at Hastings, England. It captures a moment when the sun broke dramatically through the clouds, allowing a pool of sunlight to fall on the sea below.
Most of the work on my AF page, is expressive oil painting. However, each week I spend a day in an etching studio and I find this 'process driven' way of working with print complements the fluid expressiveness of oil painting.
To create this etching I have used a zinc plate, aquatint (melting resin onto the plate with a flame, to allow the ink to 'grip'), litho crayon, ammonia, chalk, acid and burnishing. The professional etching ink is smeared onto the plate and gently removed, with some ink deliberately left to create the dark sky. This image is created by placing the inked plate on the bed of an etching press, with a sheet of damp 'Somerset' heavy weight, white paper on top. The press is then hand 'wound', pressing the plate and paper together, transferring the image onto the paper.
This artwork is part of a 'variable edition' of only 10 prints from this etching plate.
This piece is the first of the series and numbered 1/10 (please see photographs). It is signed, titled and numbered on the front.
Professionally framed in a wooden frame, hand stained black, so that the grain is still visible.
