This mixed media painting is part of a series of works for my Tiny Islands collection. Pockets Full of Shells.... is inspired by my love of shells, pebbles and glass that has been washed by the sea until it has become smooth.
Although the beaches around the islands are mainly sandy there are some beautiful pebbles and pieces of glass from broken bottles, jars and glass that have been discarded by man and reclaimed by nature, recycled by the sea. Over many years they are rolled by the waves and strong currents of the sea until they become smooth and tactile. There are also lots of crushed shells.
Today there is less and less glass as our seas and oceans are full of plastic.
As a child I always loved collecting shells and pebbles and when we went to St Ives on holiday one of the first places I would visit would be the shell shop. I still have some of my collection.
