In a series of 'Playhouse' pieces, I have been exploring ideas of nature and artifice. The usual artistic depiction of a landscape is disrupted by placing it in the context of a theatre set. With the stage empty, here the main character is the desert oasis itself. The theatre and the set are reminiscent of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun and the mass fascination that followed in the Western world for all things ancient Egypt.
Paper (watercolour, washi, pastel, hemp), acrylic, ink, archival glue
