Wandering around the medieval walled city of Avignon in Provence, you come across several squares filled with cafes and restaurants but none are as idyllic as the Place des Chataignes. Hidden behind the Basilique Saint-Pierre, it has a perfect size and scale. The tables and chairs are canopied with parasols and plane trees, providing dappled sunlight to filter through. The surrounding buildings are typically french with colourful shuttered windows and a variety of cafes (and one particularly good restaurant!). Sitting in the cool shade surrounded by sounds of church bells and swallows while watching people passing by is the must do of any visit to France or Italy.
