“Pharaoh’s Dance” is an acrylic painting on canvas 60cms width x 90cms height. It is part of a series of paintings called ‘The Jazz Series’. This series of paintings has been inspired by listening to the music of Miles Davis and this particular work is named after one of Miles’ composition’s called Pharaoh’s Dance from the album ‘Bitches Brew’. At this time Miles was making music that was experimental with electric instruments. Traditional jazz structures were overwritten by improvised ‘rock’ based arrangements. I listened to the album throughout the making of the painting allowing the complex rhythmical patterns to affect my judgements of line, mark, gesture and colour. African influences permeate the music and are subsumed into the art work. Art plays a game of structural truthfulness, it becomes alive. I try to make every mark and gesture sing and push beyond the fixing of appearances. There is no place for prescription. Painting should be made to look easy, painting as the embodiment of what it is to be human. Paintings are a kind of dream language, and like music they propose a new reality. Simplicity can give them their greatest power. I take inspiration from colourists such as Barbara Rae, John Hoyland and Hans Hoffman alongside African art and Art Brut.
The painting is shipped in a robust custom made cardboard crate (same as those used to transport large screens). The painting is bubble wrapped to protect the canvas. Further wrapping is made with corrugated card. A wooden frame is placed inside the cardboard crate to preserve the structural strength of the packaging. Each painting is insured to its sale value. Shipping costs within the U.K. take into consideration weight and insurance. U.K. shipping costs for this artwork are £75
