I often use a fade of color in place of a horizon line to imply an abstract landscape. Just as we have a built-in response to figurative elements, placing blue at the top of a composition naturally suggests air, sky, atmosphere and lightness. Here, the colors become more saturated toward the bottom of the painting. The openness of the color toward the head remind me of parallels in meditation, yoga and a sense of overall well being found in clearing the mind. Several times in the process of working on this piece, I saw it as an areal landscape with a body of calm water at the top.
