A portrait of fading species: Falco peregrinus

One of the world's fastest birds; in power-diving from great heights to strike prey, they reach 200 miles per hour, which is probably why it symbolizes freedom in many traditions. Although it is found on six continents, the Peregrine is uncommon in most areas; it was seriously endangered in the mid-20th century because of the effects of DDT and other persistent pesticides. What can you do to help? advocate to protect the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) which regulates industry practices in migratory areas, and reduce the use of pesticides.
