Original artwork description:

This is an oil painting of pelicans I happened to observe on the Caribbean coast of Mexico, on the beach near Tulum in August 2015. A number of them lived and hunted not far from our hotel, diving into the water to catch the fish.  One evening I managed to come up quite close to them and spent some time watching them come and go on the rocks in the sea near the shore. I absolutely loved these beautiful creatures that will always be a part of my memories of my first ever visit to Mexico. In the painting I used a relatively limited colour palette. I liked the blue of the water, slightly muted by the evening light; the light of rolling wave, lifting the sand off the shore; the brown, deep red and black of the sand and the seaweed, mixed into the surf of the sea covering it and dragging it back into the sea; the vast span of the wings of the pelican landing on the rock, amongst his mates, who were resting and cleaning their feathers nearby; the velvet appearance of the bird’s chest and neck.
