A close portrait of an Australian Pelican (Pelecanus conspicillatus).
The photograph gives the impression that the bird is gazing into the distance, deep in thought
The angle of the shot gives you a view of the subtle blue in the sea of yellow surrounding the eye. In breeding season this become a dramatic large dark blue and gives a comical clown like appearance.
The folds clearly visible in the pouched throat are the secret of the ability to stretch out such that they can contain around a toilet cistern full of water
The Australian Pelican is one of my favourite birds. It is not pretty in everyone's eyes, but few would argue that they are dramatic and eye catching and you will never forget your first encounter with them
