Maslow described peak experiences as, "rare, exciting, oceanic, deeply moving, exhilarating, elevating experiences that generate an advanced form of perceiving reality, and are even mystic and magical in their effect". Such experiences (the light coming in from the top right angle) often occur when we are at the darkest point in our lives (bottom left).
This painting is about the transcendent hope that comes from outside Self. Some call it God, some enlightenment but whatever you call it, this painting is about that moment. For me personally, this occurred when I thought I might even die. A terrible point in my life. At such times, the experience is brought into stark relief because the light feels so explicitly exterior since the interior is so murky and desperate: it must come from beyond. The light dominates the painting.
