It’s been awhile since I’ve painted one of these scenes, and it was a fun way to kick off the year that I feel very optimistic about, by creating a Scene filled with areas that imitate Patterned Swatches of Fabrics. My desire was create a looser, more abstracted feeling in this painting, compared with similar paintings of cottages, hillsides, and quilts that I’ve done in the past. I’m pleased with the looser, more spontaneous feel that resulted. My inspiration for the piece was two- fold; the first being the farming community in Oregon where I was born, and the second my lifelong friend also born there, who has just begun designing fabrics. I stole the idea for Flowered Rooftops on the Cottages from an older painting of mine. Besides the typical farm animals, I included one Rabbit as a nod to the fact that this New Year, as per the Chinese Calendar, is “The Year of the Rabbit”. This canvas is painted around the edges ( the patterns wrap around in effect) so it can be hung unframed, if preferred. ***I am offering free shipping globally for this piece as a part of a promotion in my shop, beginning this coming weekend; January 14th.
