Passion and Ecstasy - 2022, by Hugues Merle (1823-1881) - Plexiglas plate cm. 57x71
In this work I took Hugues Merle's work, Mary Magdalene in the cave, a painting made around the year 1868, as a reference. Dialogue with the Old Masters and mass culture. Combining Pop strategies and suggestions with the art of the past. In this work I rework, mythological, religious and historical themes, almost always centred on female figures. At the centre of the scene, a strongly seductive female image, exalting beauty and charm. The languid expression seems to accentuate the charge of pathos, (passion). Enchanting and suave face, with a clear and candid complexion. The gaze is turned towards a point outside the scene, giving a feeling of penitence and atonement. In this series, the connection between references drawn from mass culture and references inspired by the history of art, to propose new meanings for the spectator. A bridge between ancient and contemporary. Fusing works of classical art with contemporary digital art techniques.
Combining tradition and modernity, bringing the protagonists of the original works into surreal, imaginative, lunar settings. Each image is the result of a creative process that includes advanced digital manipulation and meticulous post-production. High-definition giclèe printing on a rigid Plexiglas panel. Works in Limited Editions, signed and numbered on the back, with a Certificate of Guarantee specially designed to be more accessible. It should be emphasised that these are always works of art, expressed in the artistic language of the author's multiples. This does not mean having a copy of the original, but a piece that the author has produced specifically for that expressive medium, in continuous dialogue with the rest of his production.
