Passion and Ecstasy - 2022, by Hugues Merle (1823-1881) - canvas 90x75 cm.
In this work I have taken Hugues Merle's work, Mary Magdalene in the Grotto, a painting made around the year 1868, as a reference. Dialogue with the Old Masters and mass culture. Combining Pop strategies and suggestions with the art of the past. In this work I rework, mythological, religious and historical themes, almost always centred on female figures. At the centre of the scene, a strongly seductive female image, exalting beauty and charm. The languid expression seems to accentuate the charge of pathos, (passion). Enchanting and suave face, with a clear and candid complexion. The gaze is turned towards a point outside the scene, giving a feeling of penitence and atonement. In this series, the connection between references drawn from mass culture and references inspired by the history of art, to propose new meanings for the spectator. A bridge between ancient and contemporary.
