This painting was painted on site on the river Moselle in Luxembourg and yet it is a painting of the village of Palzem in Germany! This is because the river Mosel acts as a natural border between the two countries and so one can sit on one side of the river in one country and paint the country on the other side! I was attracted to the subject of the cream coloured church tower above the blue of the river and the patterns in the water as it flowed. The river Mosel is a frequent subject in my paintings as it is not far from my home in South West Germany. This is one of the view paintings of the region which does not contain vineyards but rather concentrates on village life on the banks of the river and on the subject of water.
