Palm Prints…
Noon in Lincoln Park, north of downtown Los Angeles, California. Palm trees ring the lake and their shadows stamp the grass. The LA skyline looms on the horizon.

I'm always drawn to the contrast between the-hand-of-man and nature, in this case the blue city skyline on the horizon and the green park. In “Palm Prints,” the metropolis IS part of nature—an extension of the sky.

When taking reference photos—which I use as starting points for my paintings—I look for interesting and dramatic contrasts, usually created by shadows and dappled light. I love how the “Palm Prints” shadows turn a flattened view of the palm into crowns, and how they cool the grass they're resting on.

In this painting, I'm taking a refreshing break from big-city hustle-bustle…the quiet park under a bright sky, warm sunlight, a shimmering lake, and the city…only a mirage.
