I visited the Uffizi Gallery in Florence recently and, apart from the beautiful paintings of course, I was struck by how fabulously ornate the gilt frames often were. I wondered if they would work with my dramatic still life paintings - I was intrigued by how a simple, still, calm portrait of, say, cherries would look when combined with an elaborate, flamboyant, golden frame. I experimented and I think it looks fabulous, so I'm going to produce a few more of these.
The paintings themselves are quite small, because the frames are quite large by comparison and I don't want the whole visual effect to become overpowering. These paintings in these frames are like exquisite jewels, and could have stepped right out of the Renaissance.
