After 40 years of printmaking, I closed my darkroom in 2021. To keep active in traditional photographic process, I am producing limited editions of selected works as cyanotypes. Information regarding the process is readily available but briefly, the process, discovered in 1842, involves coating paper with a combination of chemicals which when combined produce a light sensitive emulsion. When the emulsion has dried, a negative is contacted printed to the paper and exposed to an ultraviolet light source such as the sun. When exposure is complete, the print is washed in water to finish the process. This print has been toned in black tea to produce beautiful deep blues and warm highlights not found in traditional cyanotype process.
Photographed at The Chicago Botanic Garden, Painted Ferns is number 1 of a limited edition of 5, hand coated, printed and toned by the artist to archival standards on Arches Aquarelle paper. The image is 6x9 inches on 7x10 paper, signed and numbered on reverse. Note that although produced as a limited edition of 5, due to the handmade nature of the process, each print is unique and can be considered a one of a kind piece.
