Original artwork description:

An archive piece painted in 2016.

Britain's asylums were closed from the mid 1980's onwards. This artwork is based on photographs taken on a visit to a derelict asylum on the outskirts of London, that was soon to be demolished. These spaces hold a strange and lingering atmosphere, perhaps imbued by their former use, although all derelict buildings, for me, hold a quiet fascination.

This painting is of a room, with marks left on the wall where a covering has been removed. Hanging from the ceiling are the remains of window coverings. An eerie atmosphere is brought to the space by the light falling across the floor, leaving dark corners.

This artwork is created using oil paint, wax and loose pigment that has been rubbed into the wax, on board. This variety of mediums has created a certain atmosphere and depth to the artwork. At the time, Anselm Kiefer's work was widely displayed in London, and I was heavily influenced by his use of mixed media.

Signed on the rear and signed Certificate of Authenticity provided.

This piece will be carefully wrapped in tissue, foam board and recycled bubble wrap, then placed in a sturdy cardboard box.

Tracking code provided.

Materials used:

Oil paint, wax and ground pigment on board
