'Oyster Catchers'

2020 by Sharon Hiley

The West coast of Scotland provides me with an abundance of natural beauty to inspire my art.

This one of a kind sculpture has evolved since December 2019, when I began creating the base from a section of wood collected from a beach walk. The rocks that feature in the local landscape are astounding and I felt this could be emulated by the use of another piece of sculptural looking driftwood. From here I had created the beginnings of something really special.

The oyster catchers that reside along the coast are such characters that I had to create at least two, then the creation of the sea took place. Time was spent in layering paper clay, ink and paint until I managed to capture the essence of the ocean. I love the depth and detail in the undulating waves.

The base is finished with a section of oak plywood which is smaller than the sculpture base to create a shadow line when displayed (see pics.)

The base measures 20cm x 20cm and the overall height of the piece is approx 20 cm.

The birds are approx 8 - 9cm long x 2.5 - 3cm wide by 3 - 4 cm high.

I intend to create more seascapes featuring other sea birds in the future but this is the first.

Thank you for looking and enjoy browsing my other mixed media artwork and Lino prints.

Materials used:

Driftwood, paper clay, metal pins, acrylic paint, ink and varnish
