An ornate and colourful door handle for a gate in San Marcus La Laguna by Lake Atitlan (Lago Atitlán) in Guatemala.
I've always wondered if the figure in the door handle possibly is a depiction of a Mayan god, but haven't been able to figure it out. It has some similarities with some of the icons I have found when researching but nothing I could match completely. I would like to think is is though.
I also love the textures of the weathered door with the exposed wood and layers of colourful paint, which gives it a great patina that significantly adds to the atmosphere of the image.
I'm very pleased to finally get this image available. I remembered taking it - where, and roughly when. However, for some reason, it always escaped me when going through my archive, and although it would pop up in my mind often I would forget to look for it when I had a root around.
