Part of my "Dramatic fruit 'n' veg" series.
Following a visit a few years ago to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, I became a bit obsessed with the outrageously elaborate gold frames that many of the paintings had. I wondered how such a frame would complement a simple subject matter, say, a still life of a single fruit or vegetable, albeit one painted like a Caravaggio chiaroscuro. The answer, to my mind, is they go together very well indeed!
The paintings themselves are a manageable size, because the frames are quite large by comparison and I don't want the whole visual effect to become overpowering. These paintings in these frames are like exquisite jewels, and could have stepped right out of the Renaissance.
