I painted this still life in an old manor house near St. Petersburg. One winter, several academic artists gathered to compete in painting. We painted everything in the neighborhood and in the rooms. The hostess of the estate invited people in costumes of a bygone era and they posed, greyhounds lay at their feet, tall Christmas trees with antique toys, still lives of authentic things complemented the whole composition and gave the rooms a completely residential look.
Three artists won. The main prize gave the artist the opportunity to go to the plein air in France. And two more people got the opportunity to live in rooms and eat, as well as draw everything around. One of those two was me. For seven days in a row I drew two etudes. Here is one of them.
This is a still life by the window. All the objects are painted in warm colors, as if warmed by a cheerful fire in the fireplace. There's a blizzard outside, a real winter. And a small figure of a slender woman in a fur coat and a muff.
I admired all the objects. According to the composition, they make up like a dance – everything is so delicate, easy, sublime.
I love this still life myself.
In this series, there are many views of a snow-covered estate from afar, genre scenes with horses and a couple of still lives. Enjoy!
