This painting was started in a woodland in the New Forest called Holiday Hill. There are many such trees in these ancient pasture woodlands, so it is not difficult to find a good subject to paint. I liked the strong colours of the rotting trunk and the rich green of the mosses. This old oak is still hanging on to life and produces a few living branches and leaves. A tree like this will live on like this for many years, and this to me gives the tree an ephemeral beauty. I placed a pony in the background to complete the composition. The frame is grained wood with waxed finish, which I think suits the painting.
