After spending time sketching en plein aire in the beautiful old village of Olargue in the south of France I returned to the studio to work from the images I had captured on my page and the impressions left in my head. The contrast of shabby peeling paint and brightly painted shutters, the strong sunlight and dark dank hidden corners. This is the first in a series of paintings on wood, I like the way the grain emerges amongst the paint, it's reminiscent of the wooden shutters. I have left the wooden sides exposed and the piece can be hung as it is, but you may prefer to frame it - a compromise would be box framing.
