We visited one of my favourite National Trust places recently and, as always, I came away from the beautiful gardens there with a head full of paintings waiting to be painted.

I did a little bit of watercolour sketching that day - the first I have done for decades - and will definitely carry on with that side of things in the future.

The thing that struck me most about what we saw, even at this time of year when things are supposedly beginning to tail off in the garden, was the abundance of colour and texture which was still all around us. I definitely need to up my own horticultural game!

Recently I have been feeling the need to get back to my (literal) roots and to paint flowers and plants in a more realistic manner - I like the fact that I can depict my favourite subject matter in so many different ways, each of which picks out an aspect of the views which I love.
