This mixed media painting was inspired by a french counting tool that was used in primary schools in the 1970s. Little painted wooden blocks of varying lengths representing the numbers 1-10 a little 1cm sq cube representing the number one and a 10cm long block representing number ten.
I have a box of them and the tactile nature of them still satisfies me now. Even more satisfying to make my own and reassemble them into this composition,
The piece is made from birch wood painted using carefully mixed inks and acrylics and they are blended to a consistency that allows the grain of the wood to show through.
