In many African societies, ancient and modern, the traditional African comb/ African pick/ Afro comb has been used to symbolize status, group affiliation, religious beliefs and in modern times as a symbol for social cultural movements. It has also played a crucial role in the creation, maintenance and decoration of hairstyles. The handles often depict objects of status, such, human figures and motifs that reference nature and the traditional spirit world.
