Painted in my garden in SW France, the painting focuses on the head of the Agapanthus caught in full sunlight and set against the darker background of the garden foliage. Each stalk and petal of the fragile flower is delineated like a separate jewel of pure colour. The circular form, with multiple branching stems, rather like an inverted candelabra, creates a very complex pattern of light and dark seen slightly from above and in depth. One of an on-going series of flower paintings which attempts to clearly define these complex structures in bright sunlight.
Oil on Linen Canvas, primed with egg & oil emulsion, varnished with Damar varnish
