Neo Deco – 26-07-24
A Little Experiment
This oil painting ‘Neo Deco – 26-07-24’ is a little experiment in color. There was this beautiful bodyscape of the 1920s I found. This retro picture was perfect for my art deco and cubist endeavours. By little I also mean literally. The size of the wood panel is 15 x 15 cm. Strangely I never work with oils on such a small surface. However, there must be a first go for everything and there was a special reason. You see, I’m member of the Art Society Vlietstreken (Kunstgenootschap Vlietstreek) celebrating its lustrum during the coming autumn. The board of the association has asked each of her members to do a small size panel. They will be framed in one big tableau and be exhibited at various places in the region. Hence, my contribution for this event.
Interlude
Since my last oil ‘Venus Lamenting – 14-06-24’ I have made a couple of pastels. So it actually was more than a month ago I held my brushes in my hands. There are some big piecces I am planning at the end of this year. Therefor I consider this piece to be some kind of interlude. Sometimes those are the best, especially when all bets are off. The bodscape didn’t need much abstraction though so I got some great cubist forms instantly. Even though the undercoat was done in perylene black and white I added a lot of color on top.
Colorful Quilt
The result is a some kind of colorful quilt-looking female form. Initially I planned to do only angular figures but I incorporated a couple of curves as well. You can see that in the lower belly and the area around the calf and foot. This way the model looks less straight than all forms let on.
