I painted this abstract through adding and subtracting acrylic and acrylic medium. Basically I began by adding polyacrylic modeling paste, colored, and hardened, then making various racking marks (one of my favorite marking tools is a hair comb, which I've used here). Then I use a rotary sander to remove layers of paint that I've added above the modeling paste, and I go through this process numerous times, saving only some of the marks with each iteration. Consequently there are many layers of work visible in the finished work, which I hope holds together as a whole and yet reveals the history of its making. While it is abstract, the final image is suggestive of something that lives in the sea, or in the air, or both, perhaps mythological: thus the title.
