Artwork description:

An ethereal horse and rider sculpture with a strong sense of life and movement, even within a stationary position.

Nature-Spirit Rider XIV and his horse are standing motionless together, perhaps having been encountered by surprise in a woodland glade. They are in unity and harmony together, without requiring anything extra from the outside world.

Nature-Spirit Rider XIV is a continuation of the Nature-Spirit Riders series, further exploring our embodied connection with nature.

Every time I encounter a horse I am amazed by the beauty of their integrity. I always feel moved, as if their honesty enables me to re-connect with that part of myself. Naturally, I default to making horses whenever I need to communicate this kind of feeling. My connection with horses feels like how this figure is riding, and I find it sustaining and replenishing. The rider’s antlers add to that sense of wisdom from the natural world.

I made this sculpture by modelling with wax onto a wire armature, or framework, and then I moulded and cast it using an innovative technique that I have pioneered. You can see pictures of me casting this series in the “Me at Work” section of my Profile.

The sculpture is made of made of a modern British eco-resin which allows me to reproduce the beautiful semi-translucent cream colour of the original wax into a durable form. The vibrant contemporary material brings a special resonance and allows for interesting glimpses through to the armature, or internal structure of the sculpture. It is for sale as a limited edition of 24, and is mounted on a semi-translucent, almost black, flat acrylic base. It is 15cm long, 19cm tall, and 7cm wide including the base. The sculpture is initialled on the inside of the top of the horse’s left hind leg, and comes with a signed letter of authentication stating its edition number.

Although this sculpture looks delicate it is actually much more robust than it appears, and can withstand small knocks and movements in the home. Being made in a light-weight material, it weighs less than half a kilo and is easy to transport and move about. I package it in a sturdy cardboard box and it travels very well by courier.
