The painting, in contemporary figurative style, is inspired by some sentences from the "Letters" of Saint Catherine of Siena (1347-1380), where the Saint writes to a "very dear sister Bartholomew": "...We seek joy only in Jesus, and we flee all glory other than that of the cross. Embrace, therefore, Jesus crucified, raising to him the gaze of your desire! Consider the fiery love for you, which led Jesus to shed blood from every part of his body! Embrace Jesus crucified, lover and beloved, and in him you will find true life, for it is God who became man. Burn your heart and soul for the fire of love drawn from Jesus crucified on the cross!..."
