I was inspired by the expression of wonder in this portrait to create a fantastical world of beauty and hope. Once I had decided that a bluebird would be a good symbol for this as well as being a focus for the woman's gaze the rest of the painting flowed from there. The figure grows from the meadow, she is a personification of natural wonder and the cycles of life. the circular shapes leant me towards an art nouveau approach to the composition. I used a combination of watercolors, colored pencils and gouache to create the various effects and intensity of colour.
