Original collage, 2019
Medium: paper, charcoal, acrylic, pastel on paper
Size: 38x54 cm (15x21.3 in.)

“Illusion of communication” is a series of works by Lyubov Biriukova that explores themes of identification and self identification, issues of loss and swapping of personality in relationships and communication caused by transference, the subconscious transfering of earlier feelings and relationships related to one person onto a completely different person. The world of phantoms. Indifference and absence in relationships. People as partial objects. Reality is substituted for memories and introects.
The works are done in collage technique. The artist draws portraits, deconstructs them into pieces and then reconstructs them adding arbitrary elements. A portrait of a new phantom person is created combining parts of her predecessors but being none of them.
What do you see when you look at me? My sharp brows remind you of your irritated partner after a row. My slightly lowered eyes - the endless sorrow from your childhood. My sleek forehead - the inviting sign of a cafe that you used to frequently pass by last summer. I am the phantom constructed out of your memories, desires and fragments of reality. The moment passes and I am created anew, for you are new also. Can you look beyond the image of me and see the real me?
