'My First Selfie' is from Elle's Dreaming/Drowning series which asks,
Is body positivity a pure, uncorruptable concept, or is it a blurry one?
When we dress up and admire ourselves in a mirror, or snap a selfie, is that just playful dreaming? Or are we drowning in an ocean of aesthetic ideals, that are overwhelming us like never before?
Have we all become vain narcissists, or are we simply reclaiming our power now we have the tools to curate and record our own image, in the privacy of our bedroom?
And do the same rules apply to all women, and as we age?
Inspired by one of Elle's own selfies, the painting depicts a woman standing in a mirror, abstracted as if through an under-water lens.
Heavy body acrylic on stretched canvas
