During the winter months, large numbers of Starlings visit Britain from Eastern Europe, where the cold weather forces them to migrate in search for food and warmer weather. I love the way they dance and sing together in the skies as if it was a mass ballet.
In the early evening just before dusk, the flocks gather in the skies above their roost sites - sheltered places such as reedbeds and woodlands. Hundreds of thousands of Starlings join together merging and separating, swooping and diving as one. There is safety in numbers — Peregrine falcons and other predators find it hard to target a single bird in the hypnotising mass. As the Starlings settle for the night, they congregate to keep warm and exchange information, such as where to find food.
