Moss Land
Langfield Catchment Series
Watercolour Paint on heavy watercolour paper.

30x 15 inches
About this work
This series of work is based on the terrain and water behaviour of the area of moorland in the upper catchment area of the river Calder above Todmorden.
The focus of this body of work is a small area of the upper catchment of the River Calder above Todmorden and Hebden Bridge. The sources of some tributaries to the main river have been visited and studied, as well as the main river itself as it flows though the towns. The influence of what happens to the land and the water in the uplands is one of the main areas of interest for the production of the artwork.
Visits in every season were made to study a small tributary of the river Calder arising on Langfield Common to the South East of Todmorden In summer the source was barely discernible, hidden amongst couch grasses and sphagnum mosses. In winter the snow revealed the course of the river at its start as it gathered pace through the wet land now solid and set, a river waiting to happen again.
I was looking at the shapes of the flow, and the boulders and plants that intercept it. The idea that there exist multiple planes within this landscape both above and below the water is important to the way the painting was made. The painting is many layered, to express the layers of water, and the land, and time passing as the rivers flow.
