Original artwork description:

This painting expresses feelings of ecstatic exuberance and is inspired by the biblical story of the creation of the animals. A huge sun shines down on the world and the animals, seeing it for the first time, are amazed by its beauty and power and rush to meet it.

Although the painting is based on a religious story, it is a celebration of the natural world and of the power of nature in general.

The painting is on an oak panel prepared with gesso. The sky has been water gilded with 23 carat gold leaf and the sun has then been incised and punched into the gold so that it glitters as the light changes. The fish, leaping out of the waterfall have been covered with silver leaf, which has been sealed with cvarnish to prevent tarnishing. The paint was made by grinding dry pigments in egg yolk. The purity of the paint and the its over the white gesso ground gives the colours the striking luminosity that is typical of egg tempera painting.

The painting is signed and dated on the reverse and has a d-ring attached so that it is ready to hang.

Materials used:

Oak panel, gesso, gold leaf, silver leaf, pigments, egg yolk tempera
