Poplar trees are a typical sight in Zeeland in the Netherlands and I painted these ones near the village of Retranchement on the Dutch/Belgian border. The little cottages with their red rooves tucked in behind the dyke are also typical for the region. For me, conveying the subject accurately is as important as the watercolour technique applied in doing so. The haziness of the morning has been conveyed by lifting out colour to create a shaft of sun shining through the trees and a spattering technique to suggest the leaves.
